Small-Scale Aquaponics

Year: 2014

Grant Amount: $6,000

Aquaponics is the idea of raising fish and growing plants in the same system using a combination of aquaculture and hydroponics. Nutrient-rich water is pumped from the fish tank to a grow bed, where bacteria converts nitrite to nitrate, which plants can consume, as it acts as a natural fertilizer. Aquaponics systems can support alternative farming practices, and utilizing one on campus moves the University towards its sustainability goals as well as serves as a learning opportunity for students building, maintaining, and observing the system.
